Whether it’s spas, museums, sightseeing or factory outlets of all kinds: the Swabian Alb offers more than just outdoor activities and, on dreary days, practically challenges you to discover these other sides too.

And now it’s up to you. Experience – relax – enjoy – it’s all possible even in bad weather.

Cave tours

The Swabian Alb is famous for its caves. Many of them have been developed for visitors and are open to the public. Among the most notable is the Bärenhöhle in Sonnenbühl, renowned for its beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, which can be admired in its high, spacious chambers.
The Nebelhöhle is also one of the well-known show caves in the Swabian Alb. Visitors can explore bizarre stalactite formations and mysterious chambers stretching over a length of 380 metres.

Shopping

For decades, the textile industry was the economic flagship of the Swabian Alb. Even today, you’ll find numerous outlets in Albstadt run by local textile manufacturers, offering regional bargains ranging from underwear to cycling gear.

The best known is undoubtedly the Outletcity in Metzingen, which is famous far beyond the region and offers fashion to suit every taste and budget, alongside high-end designer fashion.

Factory tour

The pasta manufacturer Alb-Gold is based in Trochtelfingen, some 30 km away. Take a tour of the pasta production facilities there (Monday to Friday at 11.30) and stay for lunch at the pasta restaurant, Sonne. You can finish off by stocking up on pasta products made on site at Alb-Gold’s Landmarkt.

You’ll find more outlets and factory shops in the Swabian Alb in our shopping guide, available at the reception.

Albaquarium in Albstadt-Ebingen

Visitors can explore the world of fish and reptiles across more than 40 small biotopes. The aquarium complex, containing over 22,000 litres of water, is home to fish from every continent on Earth, including clownfish and red piranhas. There is also a terrarium exhibition where visitors can observe geckos and chameleons, amongst others. Most recently, white-tailed marmosets have also been added to the collection.
